CHAPTER 14

Louella Belle

“Good morning, Louella Belle,” Bo says. “Ready for the competition?”

“Sure am.” I make a fist and swing my arm slightly to show him that I’m in it to win it at the same time he reaches for something from someone behind me. My knuckles make contact with his jaw. It’s not Rocky-hard because it lacks momentum, but his eyes flash and his expression hardens.

I spring into frantic action, attempting to touch his jaw gently to detect injuries while making apologies. “I am so sorry. I was just motioning for emphasis and didn’t see you.” I glance over my shoulder at one of the members of the street team.

The brutish look he gives me says back off. “I’m fine. As long as that wasn’t caught on social media.”

“No, I was just about to...” The hipster trails off and then passes Bo an envelope—what I presume he was reaching for before I walloped him in the face. “Kim asked me to give that to you.”

“Sure. I’ll look at it later.”

“Are you sure you’re okay? I can go get some ice or—” Or disappear.

There’s hardly even a red splotch on his face, but my knuckles ache.

“Truly, it was like being hit by a puppy. Startled me, that’s all. Anyway, about the interview earlier—” Bo starts.

That queasiness burbling inside tells me there’s more to the story than he’s letting on.

I tuck my hands behind my back for safekeeping. You never know when they might go on a seek-and-explore mission for his abs. “I should’ve warned you that I get a little awkward on camera. Not sure why, but as soon as that red dot starts glowing, I freeze up. I have a chronic case of camera-itis.”

Bo’s expression catches between a frown and...I’m not sure what. Annoyance that I’m the difficult contestant? Irritation that I practically slugged him? Barely concealed amusement? No, that couldn’t be. After hearing his convo with Kim, I’m on the quick list for dismissal from this contest.

He clears his throat. “Actually, I thought you did great despite your discomfort. What you said was interesting, articulate, and—”

I wave my hands. Mayday. Mayday. “You’re just trying to make me feel better.”

“Well, if anything I said made you feel bad, I’m very sorry.”

I tilt my head in question. “What do you mean?”

“The thing about wishing you good luck yesterday—”

“Oh, that. I have luck on my side. Talent? Maybe. Skills? Perhaps. But luck? I have heaps of the stuff.” If I just keep telling myself that, it’ll have to come true. I flash what I hope is a convincing smile.

“Great. Well, everyone headed to lunch. Are you hungry?”

“Will there be chocolate?”

“For lunch?”

“When available, it’s important to consume some at every meal for nutritional purposes, of course.”

Bo chuckles. “Seriously? I hadn’t heard that it was part of the food pyramid.”

“Oh, it’s the base—the big part at the bottom. You should have at least three to twelve servings of chocolate a day.”

“Well, it’s no wonder, considering the way you look,” a sharp female voice says as we exit the set.
